More Myths Concerning Alcohol

There are a lot of myths that exist in pop culture concerning the consumption of alcohol and its effects on people. A few of these myths are reasonable but the majority of them are completely ridiculous. These myths have become part of the aura surrounding alcohol consumption and often have a negative effect on people.
The first myth of the day to attack is the one that people have adopted concerning the alcohol content of their beverage. Many people feel that if they want a drink with less alcohol in it, they should have a glass of wine. This is a ridiculous claim. Regardless of what a person drinks, they are likely to get a comparable amount of alcohol. This is because a standard drink is a) 12 ounces of regular beer, b)5 ounces of wine, or c) one and a half ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits, either straight or in a mixed drink. If an individual has 12 ounces of wine rather than 12 ounces of beer, they will have more alcohol, but, on standard drinks, the overall amount of alcohol is very close.
Another myth concerns the ability of coffee to sober a person up. Many people believe that drinking coffee will help alcohol leave the body faster and render an individual sober. This is, quite frankly, untrue. The only thing that will sober a person up is time. Coffee, or any other home remedy for that matter, has not been shown to speed up the process of sobriety. Science has indicated that alcohol will leave the body at a rate of approximately .015 BAC per hour, regardless of other influences.
The final myth of the day involves the misconception that individuals, regardless of gender, that are the same height and weight can drink the same amount of alcohol and have identical responses. The first flaw in this myth is that gender doesn’t matter. Gender, in fact, does matter because women have a higher fat to muscle ratio. You’ll see why this matters in a minute. In addition, women’s bodies do not break down alcohol as well as men because they have less of a particular enzyme. It has been proven that people with a higher proportion of fat to lean muscle have a lower percentage of body water which gives the alcohol a stronger effect. This is why gender matters. The second portion of the myth that is just ridiculous is that people of the same height and weight can drink the exact same amount with similar affects. The problem here is the assumption that people who are the same height and weight have identical body compositions. Just because people weigh the same amount does not mean they have the same fat to muscle ratio and so, this myth is ridiculous.
