Forget car accidents and plane crashes, stress kills thousands more people each and every year and the figures are not falling. People need to work harder and longer each day just to make ends meet, but at what expense? We are forced to work, without working we can not afford to live in relative comfort. The cost of wanting to better our lifestyle can have a large price tag, our health. The expression “working themselves into an early grave” was probably written with stress in mind.

Stress causes anxiety which in turn prevents us from functioning at one hundred percent of our ability. You may actually feel as though you are working harder and harder, and doing more and more work. In actuality you have probably got the same amount of workload as you had prior to suffering from stress. You are not getting more work and the tasks are not getting harder, your body is talking to you, it’s saying “relax”. If you don’t relax you can not continue for long before something gives, you could be headed for a mental breakdown.

Managing stress will only work if you acknowledge the fact that you are suffering from it. Many people think that they can deal with their problems later, this is almost laughable, it can’t wait until later. I am not talking about people who feel a little under pressure to perform a certain task well. I am talking about people who feel like the problems of the world are resting on their shoulders, and it’s not just the people who have management positions either. Anyone who works in an office is part of a team; the team is only as good as each person. If one person starts to cause stress between their colleagues, it won’t be long before a stressful situation arises.

To control stress you first need to understand it. Stress kills!

Which ever route you decide on for dealing with stress you must realize that it is not a quick fix, your problems may have been building for years, they are not going to be gone over night.
